The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit organisation and world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. The Black Dog Institute is committed to protecting your privacy and the privacy of any personal information provided to us. In accordance with the amendments of the Privacy Act 1988 which came into effect on 12 March 2014, we comply with the Australian Privacy Principles set out in the Act. What personal information do we collect and why do we need it?

The Black Dog LMS ( is an online Learning Management System using the Moodle platform that provides individual access to the Black Dog Institute online courses. The only personal information we collect in Moodle is information you have provided to us in creating your user account. In order to provide individual access to the online courses, user accounts must contain personal information including: First name, Last name, Email address, Username and Password. Other personal information may be added at the user’s discretion including: City/town, Country, Time-zone, Description, Preferred language, User picture, Additional names, and several other optional profile preferences. As an additional note, we collect and store your computer/device's IP Address in Moodle.

How do we collect the personal information?

This personal information is provided by the user when creating their account or editing their profile.

Who will see or have access to your personal information?

Unless we are required to provide your personal information to others by law, by court order or to investigate suspected fraud or other unlawful activity, your personal information will only be seen or used by the Black Dog LMS administrator. We do not and will never sell your personal information to a third party. Similarly we will never serve ads that use third-party tracking cookies that follow your movements and behaviour over the internet. Your personal information will not be shared with the third party software agencies utilised in this site including Moodle and Piwik. All personal information is exclusively stored onshore in our Sydney server.

Security of Information

Our information systems and files are kept secured from unauthorised access and our staff and contracted agents and service providers have been informed of the importance we place on protecting your privacy and their role in helping us to do so. Information will be stored and disposed of in a secure environment, which may only be accessed by authorized personnel.

Although we will endeavour to protect your personal information, we are unable to guarantee that any information you transmit to us over the internet is 100% secure. Any information you transmit to us is conducted at your own risk.

What if I want to check what personal information you hold about me?

Subject to any legal restrictions, we are happy to advise you what personal information we hold about you, should you request this. If your request is particularly complex or requires detailed searching of our records, there may be a cost to you in order for us to provide this information.

If you believe there are errors in our records about you, please let us know and we will be happy to investigate and correct any inaccuracies.


The Black Dog LMS requires the use of cookies to keep the user’s SCORM session connected to the LMS.


The Black Dog LMS uses the Piwik analytics platform to analyse the audience statistics to improve our content. No personal information is collected using Piwik. In Piwik, we collect and store session information such as your anonymised IP address, device type, operating system, screen resolution, browser agent, time and length of visits, and pages you have visited within our site. Your IP address is anonymised by masking the last 2 bytes before storing it in Piwik. We use Piwik to help us monitor server loads and improve user experience.
